Description
RICHARD (LOETZ GLASSWORKS)
SPINDLE-SHAPED VASE WITH SLENDER NECK, CIRCA 1920–1925
A significant vase in multi-layered blown glass, spindle-shaped with a narrow, slightly flared neck, resting on a domed base. The continuous decoration, executed in acid-etched cameo with heavy reserve, depicts a Central European landscape of lakes and forests dominated by a fortified residence with a square tower. The dark brown and jet-black decoration stands out strikingly against an opalescent satin background with intense shades of orange and amber, creating a remarkable sense of depth.
multi-layered glass (or cameo)
signed ‘Richard’ (in relief at the base of the design)
H. 46 cm
Although signed ‘Richard’, this vase was produced by the prestigious Austrian glassworks Johann Loetz Witwe, based in Klostermühle in Bohemia (now the Czech Republic). In the 1920s, the factory created the ‘Richard’ brand to expand its exports to France, drawing inspiration from the success of the glassworks of the École de Nancy, notably those of Émile Gallé and Daum. These pieces, crafted from acid-etched multilayered glass, are distinguished by their colour contrasts – often orange and black – and their depictions of Central European or Mediterranean landscapes. They elegantly illustrate the transition from the naturalism of late Art Nouveau to the early forms of Art Deco.
