BASED ON A DESIGN BY LOUIS COMFORT TIFFANY FAVRILE GLASS TABLE LAMP, EARLY 20TH CENTURY signed ‘L.C.Tiffany Favrile’ H. 44.5 cm; D. 37.5 cm Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848–1933) was a pioneering designer of the American Art Nouveau movement, known for his innovative use of glass in the decorative arts. In the early 1890s, he developed Favrile glass, a richly iridescent material whose name derives from an Old English word meaning ‘handmade’. Unlike glass with a painted surface, Favrile glass is coloured throughout, giving it a unique depth and luminosity. Patented in 1894, it was developed in Tiffany’s New York workshop by master glassmaker Arthur J. Nash, drawing inspiration from ancient Roman and Syrian glass. Its characteristic lustre is achieved through the addition of metal oxides. Favrile glass received international recognition, notably the Grand Prix at the 1900 Paris World’s Fair, and became a central feature of Tiffany’s famous lamps, vases and stained-glass windows.
