Denise GATARD (1908–1991) Triangular dish, in white and aniseed-yellow glazed ceramic with a diamond-patterned decoration; the reverse is glazed black. Monogrammed ‘DG’ in relief on the reverse. Dated to the 1950s. Dimensions: 5 x 28.8 x 29.5 cm. Denise Gatard (1908–1991) was a French ceramicist and the elder sister of the renowned ceramicist Georges Jouve. Trained by the lacquer artist Jean Dunand, she began developing an original body of work in the 1940s, combining ceramics, research into glazes and influences from lacquer art. Her creations are characterised by free-flowing, minimalist and often asymmetrical forms, as well as by contrasts of white, black, brown and gold.
