Our sketch, drawn by Prud'hon, is a design for the ceiling of the Salle de Diane in the Louvre. On 6 March 1801, the Museum Council appointed him to paint the ceiling for this room, the iconographic programme for which had been drawn up by Visconti. Prud'hon was to paint Diana imploring Jupiter not to subject her to the laws of Hymen in the centre; Diana Lucifera carrying two lighted torches and Night extinguishing the torches of the day on the sides. The central subject, surrounded by four large bas-reliefs, was the only one to be executed.
In our sketch, Diana is advancing through the air towards Jupiter, seated on his throne and holding his hand. Our study contains variations on the ceiling of Diana's room, with three Olympian divinities and two small angels appearing alongside Diana and Jupiter. Delacroix commented on the richness of this composition: "Prud'hon is all there: the nobility and lightness of the goddess, the skilful arrangement, the beauty of the background against which we catch a glimpse of the Olympian divinities drowned in a luminous vapour, all this is the work of a consummate master". E. DELACROIX, "Prud'hon", in Revue des Deux-Mondes, 1 November 1846.
