Description
Gérard DUMEZ's studio collection. 1st chapter of his life in Paris where he attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts and began painting. A few charcoals, pastels and watercolours but his favourite medium was oil on canvas. He took up ceramics actively and enjoyed success (including in export markets), enabling him to make a living from it (vases, pots, boxes, lamp bases, jugs, plates, dishes, egg cups and a series of jewellery pieces). He had to stop for health reasons, and put his talents at the service of advertising, without ever giving up painting.
He was a pupil of Yves Brayer, then his first studio assistant (massier) at La Grande Chaumière in Montparnasse. Their close friendship led Gérard to spend many holidays at Brayer's house in Les Baux de Provence, where they painted together.
His favourite subjects on canvas are landscapes (he paints a lot outdoors with his portable easel), bouquets of flowers (where his ceramic vases are often found) and still lifes. He tried his hand at a few nudes, with less success.
In his first period of painting (the oldest canvases), his palette was dark. The second period had a much brighter palette. He then had fun with an offbeat, humorous and eccentric period that he often signed "La récré de Gérard Dumez" (Gérard Dumez's recreation); he also did some famous reproductions that he did not sign, of course.
He exhibited on several occasions: I have found traces of the Salon d'Automne in Paris, the Salon Art 91, the Salon des Arts in Chaumont sur Yonne (when his brother Daniel DUMEZ took up painting when he retired, they exhibited there together, and one year even with their niece Ariane FASSETI, daughter of the third DUMEZ son).
