Alexandre Céleste Gabriel PREVOST (Paris 1832–1910) Allegory of Justice. Oil on canvas, signed lower left, with an inscription at the top: ‘A’. 29 x 16.5 cm. On the reverse of the stretcher, a handwritten note in blue pencil: ‘2’ or ‘9’; the canvas merchant’s stamp on the reverse of the canvas: ‘FABRIQUE DE COULEURS/ Maison MERLIN/ PAUL DENIS SUCCr/ 19, Rue Médicis/ PARIS/ CANVASES & DRAWING MATERIALS’ Provenance: a private collection from Tours focusing on the Beaux-Arts competitions and the Prix de Rome in the 19th and early 20th centuries, as well as on academic works. A pupil of Lasalle and Jeanron. He exhibited at the Salon from 1850 onwards and was a member of the Société des Artistes Français from 1886. A painter of genre scenes and still lifes, a portraitist, watercolourist and etcher.
