Description
Gaspard GRESLY (Isle sur le Doubs 1712 - Besançon 1756) Young boy with candle On its original canvas Misses and lifts 73 x 61 cm Provenance: Lemud collection (according to an old label). The theme of the half-length figure emerging from the shadows by candlelight has been treated on several occasions by Gresly. One of his most famous paintings is Jeune paysan à la chandelle (Young Peasant by Candlelight), kept at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Besançon (see the catalogue of the exhibition Gaspard Gresly (1712-1756), un peintre franc-comtois au XVIIIe siècle, Besançon, Musée des Beaux-Arts, 1994, no. 1, repr). The subject was common in the northern schools, with artists such as Schalken, and Gresly was probably also influenced by Georges de La Tour, whom he met through engraving during his formative years.
