Description
Ink and colour painting on paper, hoshi mandara (星曼荼羅図) (known as the ''Mandala of the Stars''*) for the Hoshi Matsuri celebration. In the centre, Ichijikinrin Butcho 字金輪仏頂, in the form of Shaka Kinrin 釈迦金輪 (Shaka with the golden wheel), manifestation of Shakyamuni Buddha; around and below, the sixteen devas (with a representation of the seven stars of the Big Dipper in the form of figures in Chinese mandarin robes, and the nine planets); In the second frame, the twelve signs of the zodiac; in the outer frame, the twenty-eight constellations of traditional Chinese astronomy, personified by Buddhist deities. Mounted on a scroll; folds, small tears, wear. Japan, Shingon school, Edo period, 17th-18th century. 85.5 x 54.5 cm (painting) This type of mandala is used in the esoteric Sukuyō-dō 宿曜道 rituals practised in the Lunar New Year aimed at preventing natural disasters and individual misfortune.
