Édouard Goerg, painter and engraver, born in 1893 in Sydney to French parents living in Australia, studied at the Ranson Academy until the declaration of war in 1914. Returning from the front deeply shaken and rebellious, the young artist sought to move and change the world with the means at his disposal. He depicted with cynicism and sarcasm the bourgeois society that had led them to war. He elongated his subjects and caricatured men to make them eloquent, the physical distortion intended to reflect that of the soul.
In the 1920s, Édouard Goerg exhibited in Paris at the Galerie Panardie, with Berthe Weill and Georges Bernheim, in Brussels at the Galerie du Centaure, and Paul Guillaume presented his work in London, New York, Chicago, Boston and Philadelphia.

Happy New Year’, ‘The Civil War’ and ‘The Peasant’s Fortunes and Misfortunes’.
Goerg’s apocalyptic visions came to an end in 1939 when the threats of war became reality; to defy the occupiers, he painted carefree flower-women, as if life were beautiful…
