Georges VALMIER (1885-1937) Woman with a Necklace, 1930 Gouache on tracing paper, signed, dated and annotated "To my old friend ... affectionately" lower right. Height 25.8 cm; Width: 20 cm Provenance : - Maurice Berdon (engraver-lithographer of Georges Valmier); - Galerie Roque, Paris ; - Galerie Guénégan, Paris; - Collection D., from a private mansion on the Right Bank. Bibliography: - Denise BAZETOUX, Georges Valmier, catalogue raisonné, Éditions Noème, Paris 1993, n° 144 p. 72. Georges Valmier started out as an Impressionist and a Classical painter, but during the war he met Albert Gleizes in Toul, where he was posted. Gleizes introduced him to Léonce Rosenberg in 1919, who took him on as a contract artist at his Effort Moderne gallery. From then on, his work, influenced by Cubism, oscillated between figuration and abstraction. In 1930, Georges Valmier produced a number of gouache studies for the painting "Femme au collier", one of his last figurative works before he turned definitively to abstraction.
