Georges Valmier started out as an Impressionist and a Classical painter, but during the war he met Albert Gleizes in Toul, where he was posted. Gleizes introduced him to Léonce Rosenberg in 1919, who took him on as a contract artist at his Effort Moderne gallery.
From then on, his work, influenced by Cubism, oscillated between figuration and abstraction.
In 1930, Georges Valmier produced a number of gouache studies for the painting "Femme au collier", one of his last figurative works before he turned definitively to abstraction.
