Antoniucci Voltigero, known as Volti (1915-1989), is one of the great figures of post-war French figurative sculpture. Born in Albano, Italy, and naturalised in France, Volti trained in Nice and then at the École des Beaux-arts in Paris. Influenced by the art of Rodin, Bourdelle and above all Maillol, he nevertheless developed a very personal language at an early age, devoted exclusively to the female body. Faithful to traditional anatomical representation and working from a model, he magnified the carnal sensuality of the female nude by shaping bodies with full masses, rounded volumes and simplified lines. The sculptor favours seated, crouching or reclining poses: these generously shaped but always controlled female bodies emanate an imposing yet calm and soothing presence.
