Description
Henri ANSPACH (1882-1979) The Port of Toulon, 1978 Oil on panel, signed and dated lower right. Height 49.5 cm; Width: 65 cm Henri Anspach (Brussels, 1882-Portet-sur-Garonne, 1979) was a reconverted painter after an Olympic fencing career that saw him win a gold medal in team épée for Belgium at the Stockholm Olympic Games in 1912. Following this victory, he studied painting at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Liège under Léon Frédéric. He then moved to Paris, where he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes français (1913), the Salon d'automne (1920) and the Salon des Indépendants (1926-28). From these Belgian and French influences, he developed an impressionist-modern style with a luminous palette, focusing on the calm atmosphere of everyday life and the light of landscapes.
