Michel Robert studied sculpture with his father. He exhibited his animal subjects, both domestic and wild, at various fairs such as the Salon national des beaux-arts, the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon des artistes décorateurs. His talent for direct carving enabled him to work for the Monuments Historiques as a copyist, as well as for contemporary sculptors such as Alfred Janniot, Antoniucci Volti, René Quillivic and Gabriel Coquelin. It was in the late 1990s that he decided to use the pseudonym David Mesly to sign his works.
