Charles Artus was introduced to sculpture in Édouard Navellier's studio. Thanks to his regular visits to the Jardin des Plantes, the sculptor specialised in animal sculpture. His meeting with François Pompon, whose assistant he became, encouraged him to move away from the naturalist style of his training and concentrate on volume, while retaining the study of the animal's character. In 1931, he joined the "Groupe des Douze" and exhibited at a number of shows, including the Salon des Animaliers, the Salon d'Automne, the Salon des Artistes Français and the Salon des Indépendants. His prolific output and distinctive style enabled Charles Artus to become one of the great animal sculptors of the inter-war period and to gain international renown. Only a few copies of La Tête de chat were made, all of them during the artist's lifetime.
