Gouache was an independent means of expression for the sculptor Ossip Zadkine.
In the 1920s and 1930s, Zadkine was an assiduous drawer and showed a predilection for the gouache technique, which he used independently of sculpture. At this point in his career, gouaches were easier to sell than sculptures, which explains the abundance of their production. With their bright colours and simple, seductive subjects, often inspired by Antiquity, many were quickly snapped up.
In the 1950s, his graphic work was closer to the sculptures produced at that time, before abstract gouaches appeared in the 1960s.
