Description
AUBUSSON The Triumph of Bacchus in India. A rare Louis XV-period tapestry in wool and silk. 228 x 164 cm (Minor imperfections in places; the original colours retain their lovely vibrancy). Key features visible on the tapestry: Bacchus and his army: In the centre-right, the young god Bacchus appears crowned with bunches of grapes. He leans on his thyrsus (a long staff adorned with a pine cone). A young horned satyr holds a cup of wine at his side, whilst a feline drinks from a stone vessel. The Indian elephant: The central iconographic element of the ‘Indian triumph’, a richly armoured war elephant dominates the scene on the left, ridden by a mahout brandishing a goad. It directly symbolises the distant lands conquered by the god. The satyrs and offerings: In the foreground on the left, a kneeling satyr, clad in an animal skin (probably that of a panther), presents a basket overflowing with fruit and grapes to the god. Behind him, another member of the procession (a faun) blows a foghorn to herald the victory. The setting and the weave: The background features a wooded landscape with large trees characteristic of Aubusson weavers. The foreground is adorned with a still life depicting baskets of grapes.
