A romantic scene within a medallion adorned with flowers and foliage.
Tapestry woven from wool and silk (signs of wear in the silk threads).
Louis XVI period, c. 1770.
Height: 232 cm – Width: 163 cm
Note: this delicate and elegant tapestry depicts a young couple in the central medallion. The tightly composed design reveals only a few plant motifs, a hat and bouquets of flowers. This scene is reminiscent of the designs created by François Boucher for the Beauvais workshop, which were regularly reproduced at the Aubusson workshop, or the courtly figures of Jean-Baptiste Huet and Nicolas-Jacques Julliard.
The tapestry has retained its beautiful colours and has no border; this may be original, as this was the period when tapestries began to be woven without borders so that they could be fitted into wooden frames.
