Description
Ruytchi Souzouki (1904–1985) Pisarro - The Gate on the Road to Pontoise Collage, cut-outs and felt-pen on paper, bearing the artist’s stamp in the bottom right-hand corner 14 x 16 cm Ruytchi Souzouki was a Japanese artist with a wide-ranging practice: painter, decorator, illustrator, lithographer, engraver and art critic. After studying at the Rio de Janeiro School of Fine Arts, notably under Rodolfo Amoedo, he settled in Paris in the early 1920s. He then frequented the Montparnasse district, where he rubbed shoulders with other Japanese artists such as Toshiô Bandô and Tsuguharu Foujita, who would later paint his portrait.
In the 1930s, Souzouki became associated with the artists of the École de Paris and formed close ties with Jules Pascin and Max Ernst in particular. He became increasingly interested in the expression of the psyche and the unconscious, which led him towards Surrealism. This influence became significant in his work and led him to experiment with automatic drawing and collage, two practices that allowed him to leave more room for chance, spontaneity and free associations.
Long forgotten, Ruytchi Souzouki has gradually been rediscovered since the 2000s. The Vallois Gallery, in Paris and New York, dedicated an exhibition to him, curated by Henri Enu, thereby helping to bring his work back into the spotlight and highlight its unique place in modern art and Surrealism.
