His works often consist of collages of several images taken from advertising, the mass media, comic strips or even stock images of propaganda from the People’s Republic of China, Cuba, Vietnam or the USSR. Through these assemblages, the artist creates a satire of capitalist and communist societies, criticising in particular the mechanisms of propaganda. The political figure he most frequently depicts is Mao Zedong, notably in his ‘Chinese Paintings’ series. Having travelled to China during the Cold War and observed the art of propaganda, Erró reuses its visual codes and language to create scenes that are at odds with reality. He thus depicts leaders such as Mao in Western settings or has revolutionary figures interact with bourgeois interiors. This blending of opposing worlds creates an ironic contrast and highlights the contradictions between different ideologies. In his compositions, Erró often favours the superimposition of two visual registers, creating vertical dynamics and striking visual contrasts.
