Description
Philippine school. 19th century. ‘A pair of Japanese-style portraits of Mr Carl Conscience and Mrs Wally Hausmann Pullmann’ Gouache on silk. Dimensions: 109 x 46 cm. The works on display feature portraits of Mr Carl Conscience (Cologne, 1873 – Solingen, 1940) and Mrs Wally Hausmann Pullmann (Cologne, 1874 – Solingen, 1974). These works can be compared to the Portrait of Queen María Cristina Dressed as a Japanese Woman, acquired by the Spanish State through the Ministry of Public Works and currently housed in the Museo del Prado. In that painting, the monarch appears wearing a kimono and holding a parasol, following similar visual conventions. In both cases, the representation is not intended to be ethnographic but rather uses Japanese elements as an aesthetic device to project an image of sophistication and social prestige. This comparison highlights how Japonism was adopted by both the monarchy and colonial elites as a visual language of modernity and cosmopolitanism, demonstrating the wide diffusion of this aesthetic among the circles of power in the late 19th century. Provenance: In the same family since its commission.
