Description
Annales de Flore et de Pomone ou Journal des Jardins et des Champs
Paris, Rousselon, Libraire-Éditeur.
Set comprising the volumes corresponding to the years 1832–1833, 1833–1834, 1834–1835, 1836–1837, 1839–1840 and 1840–1841.
An important French periodical devoted to botany, horticulture, pomology and the science of gardening, regarded as one of the most distinguished publications of its kind during the first half of the nineteenth century. Published in Paris by Rousselon from 1832 onwards, it brought together contributions from some of the leading horticulturists, botanists and illustrators of its day, becoming an indispensable reference for collectors, amateurs and professionals alike.
The work is particularly celebrated for its magnificent hand-coloured plates depicting ornamental flowers, exotic plants, fruit trees and newly introduced horticultural varieties. The earlier volumes contain hand-coloured engraved plates, while later issues adopted lithographic techniques, illustrating the evolution of French scientific illustration throughout the nineteenth century.
Beyond their artistic quality, the volumes provide a valuable record of the enthusiasm for botany and gardening that characterised Romantic-era Europe, documenting the introduction of new species, advances in ornamental horticulture and the growing interest in the acclimatisation of plants from Asia, the Americas and other parts of the world.
These volumes originate from the library of América Cazes de Coma, retaining her elegant bookplate designed by the Barcelona artist Joaquim Renart (1879–1961), a circumstance that adds notable provenance value to the collection. Inspired by classical models and decorated with allegorical scenes relating to the arts and the transmission of knowledge, the bookplate incorporates the Greek inscription Kallos Harmonia (“Beauty and Harmony”), revealing the refined intellectual profile of its owner.
América Cazes de Coma was a figure connected with the cultural circles of Barcelona during the first half of the twentieth century. Documented in correspondence preserved in the National Library of Spain and associated with the Associació de Música Antiga de Barcelona (Association of Early Music of Barcelona), her library reflects the intellectual and collecting interests of an era in which the illustrated book was regarded both as a vehicle of knowledge and as an object of cultural prestige. The presence of her bookplate adds an important dimension of provenance to these volumes, allowing part of their history of ownership, preservation and transmission to be reconstructed.
Beyond their bibliographical interest, these volumes preserve the silent trace of a former private library. América Cazes’s bookplate is not merely a mark of ownership: it constitutes the surviving vestige of a reader, a collection and an intellectual world that has now disappeared. Through it, the books cease to be anonymous copies and recover part of their own biography.
