Description
Nicolas Eustache Maurin (Perpignan, France, 1799 – Paris, 1850)
'The Maya Chief Zingari Presents His Sister to Hernán Cortés'
Hand-coloured engraving.
43 x 59 cm.
Presented in its original period carved, gessoed and giltwood frame.
As a comparative reference, mention may be made of a hand-coloured lithographic example of the same composition, Zingari Presents Aida, His Sister, to Cortés, by Nicolas Eustache Maurin (1799–1850), preserved in the collection of the Museo de América, Madrid.
The composition belongs to a series inspired by the figure of Hernán Cortés and by the Romantic vision of the conquest of Mexico developed by the French artist during the first half of the nineteenth century.
Rather than a strictly historical reconstruction, these images reflect the Romantic fascination with the encounter between the Old and New Worlds, presenting an idealised and theatrical interpretation of the conquest. Through richly detailed costumes, noble indigenous protagonists and carefully staged compositions, Maurin created works that appealed to the historical imagination and exotic tastes of nineteenth-century European audiences.
