“Saint Christopher Crossing the Waters Surrounded by a Village Landscape”
Oil on canvas. Relined.
42 x 86,5 cm.
Cuzco painting is renowned for blending Catholic iconography with elements of everyday Andean life, as well as local landscapes, fauna, and flora. Although the central subject is usually a saint or the Virgin, these works often incorporate rich and engaging details of contemporary settlements and culture.
In this scene, amid the daily life of rural inhabitants, sowing, herding, feeding pigs and chickens, spinning, working with horses, or washing clothes, Saint Christopher crosses the river that divides the village, carrying the Christ Child on his shoulders, as is customary in his iconography. The saint is depicted on a monumental scale compared to the other figures, emphasizing his greatness and reinforcing his devotional presence for the community.
Also present is the church, depicted among more modest dwellings with thatched roofs belonging to the villagers.
