Italian School. 18th century. Circle of Carlo Maratta. “Christ and the Samaritan Woman” Oil on canvas. Relined. 10.5 x 126 cm. On the reverse, a handwritten label reading “2 David Moore-Gwyn. Sotheby's Bond St. British Paintings Dept,” referring to the person who likely cataloged the painting at Sotheby’s and who, from 1976, served as the cataloguer for the “British Paintings” and “19th-Century Continental Paintings” sections, and in 2005 as vice president for the United Kingdom. Provenance: Auction at Sotheby’s where it was cataloged as a follower of Annibale Carracci. Our work follows the model of the Carracci painting held at the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest.
