Description
Zacarías González Velázquez (Madrid, 1763–1834)
“The Immaculate Virgin”
Oil on canvas.
148 x 107 cm.
The present painting appears to be published in Bertha Núñez's monograph Zacarías González 1763–1834, Plate 20, no. 23.
In her introduction to the theme of the Immaculate Conception in the work of Zacarías González Velázquez, Núñez writes:
“Throughout his long and productive career, Zacarías González Velázquez interpreted with remarkable mastery the quintessentially Spanish subject of the Immaculate Conception. Given the number of preparatory sketches that have been documented, it may be assumed that he executed a considerable number of finished works on this theme. The examples examined below reveal the evolution of a style which, beginning from inherited models, ultimately succeeded in creating prototypes and details that made the artist immediately recognizable.”
Referring specifically to the present painting, the author notes:
“There can be little doubt that this representation of the principal Marian devotion was executed during the artist’s early period, since both the compositional scheme and the retinue of angels and cherubs recall the style of his master Maella, while already incorporating characteristics distinctive to the artist himself, particularly in the treatment of the draperies and the compact handling of the paint surface. The youthful face of the Virgin, distinguished by delicate features and long dark hair, emerges among the clouds, with the symbolic serpent placed beneath her feet.”
The composition reflects the enduring popularity of the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception within Spanish religious painting and demonstrates the close relationship between Zacarías González Velázquez and the artistic legacy of Mariano Salvador Maella, one of the leading painters of the Spanish court during the late eighteenth century.
The Virgin is represented according to the traditional iconography of the Immaculate Conception, standing upon clouds and accompanied by angels and cherubs, her youthful beauty and serene expression conveying both purity and divine grace. The elegant treatment of the draperies and the refined modelling of the figure reveal the artist’s technical skill and his ability to combine academic discipline with devotional sensitivity.
