Description
Gerard Alegre i Turat (Cálix, Castellón de la Plana, 1890 - Barcelona 1959)
“Important ceiling lamp in weathered wrought iron”
128 x 100 cm.
Master forger. Tought artistic ironwork in Barcelona’s School of Labour. He held his first exhibition in 1920, sponsored by Santiago Rusiñol. He received twenty honorary degrees, two gold medals and one silver medal at the International Exhibition of Arts held in Madrid in 1953.
He forged several designs under Antoni Gaudi’s orders for the crypt of the Sagrada Familia during the golden age of Catalan Art Nouveau, as well as with Puig i Cadafalch. This made his works manifest the influence of the Art Nouveau movement, especially from Gaudi.
Amongst his most important works we should mention the iron gate of Barcelona’s old “Institut de la Dona”, the inner gates of the Palau de la Generalitat of Catalonia or the crowns of light of Barcelona’s Seminar. Also noteworthy is the door between the church and the chapel of the Temple of Tibidabo, a mature work in which the master felt he had put all his momentum and experience into.
Today you can see the artists’ works at the Cau Ferrat Museum in Sitges.
