Extract from La Revue des musées de France, Revue du Louvre, no 4, 2019:
"From 1772 to 1905, in Paris, four generations of Delafontaine succeeded one another at the head of one of the best-known bronze factories of its time. Research into Pierre-Maximilien Delafontaine (circa 1775-1860), the son of the company's founder, has enabled us to look back at his first, short career as a painter, to give us a much fuller picture of his output as a bronzemaker and to assess the place held by his factory among Parisian bronze factories in the first half of the 19th century. This article presents some of the results of this research, focusing on Pierre-Maximilien's work with museums. It retraces his original career at the Louvre, where this "artist-entrepreneur", as he called himself, went from being a history painter exhibiting at the Salon to becoming an almost regular maker of bronzes for the royal museums. It is also an opportunity to present a series of small statuettes that could have been attributed to the manufactory, bearing witness to the beginnings of art publishing".
