LOUIS XV-PERIOD CEREMONIAL SUIT, WAISTCOAT AND KNICKERBOCKERS, formerly belonging to the Prince of Condé’s physician.A court suit, waistcoat and breeches in mustard-coloured silk, embroidered in running stitch and knot stitch with a design of cornflowers and sky-blue borders. The coat has a stand-up collar, pockets and flounces at the back, long sleeves with turned-up cuffs, complete with its embroidered buttons; the lining is cream satin. The waistcoat has a stand-up collar and pockets, complete with its embroidered buttons; the lining is of cream satin and the back is of cream linen and cotton. The breeches have a wide fly (one button missing from the left leg) and inside pockets; lined with cream-coloured linen and cotton. Small stains under the arms, discreet micro-stains, the collar crease worn at the back, and normal wear in the crotch. In good overall condition. Circa 1780. Provenance: - Joseph-Philippe Philbert (Nancy 1750–1830 Nancy) - has remained in the family of his brother’s descendants to the present day. Biography: Joseph-Philippe Philbert was physician to His Royal Highness Louis Henri Joseph de Bourbon, Prince of Condé and Duke of Bourbon (1756–1830), as well as chief physician and surgeon to the Bourbon-Condé family during the reign of Louis XVIII (1815–1824). He served as Surgeon-Major of the Royal Armies, was appointed a Knight of the Order of Saint Michael in 1797 and became a corresponding member of the Grenoble Medical Society.Joseph-Philippe Philbert also treated the Prince of Condé’s son, Louis, Duke of Enghien, who was later assassinated in 1804 at Vincennes, and saved Princess Louise Adélaïde de Bourbon-Condé (1757–1824).He lived at 1 Place Royale in Nancy, having followed the princes into exile in Germany and then to London. It is likely that he returned to France during the Hundred Days. Comes with a booklet illustrating official documents from the period and a book currently being published on the life of the aforementioned surgeon, written by Viscount and Viscountess Hubert and Catherine Pinon de Quincy, entitled ‘Philippe Philbert, the Elder, the Senior, the Younger’.
