ROUND BOX in light-coloured horn and two-tone gold (750 thousandths), France, Louis XVI period, Gross weight: 39.90 grams. Diameter: 6 cm. Decorated on the lid with a miniature portrait by Ferdinand Machera (Dôle 1776–1843 Lyon). Bust portrait of a French infantry general, Commander of the Legion of Honour, Knight of the Order of Saint Louis. Oval format. Signed and dated on the reverse: Machera 1832. A pupil of Devosges and Isabey, Machera’s career spanned from Paris to Lyon, where he found the majority of his clientele. At ease with a variety of media (pastel, watercolour, pencil, stump, miniature), he was a regular exhibitor at the Lyon Salons from 1826 to 1840. Expert: Pierre-Antoine MARTENET.
