A native of Tremilly, near Troyes, Savinien Petit was regarded as a leading figure among the ‘French Pre-Raphaelites’ alongside Amaury-Duval
and Victor Orsel. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Dijon between 1832 and 1838, then in Paris, where he was taught by Auguste-Nicolas Hesse and Auguste-
Dominique Ingres. Thanks to a government scholarship, Petit settled in Rome between 1845 and 1850, during which time he was commissioned to copy the frescoes
in the Catacombs of Rome, which were to illustrate Louis Perret’s eponymous work published in 1851. During this time, Petit was profoundly influenced by
early Christian art and by the artists of the Early Renaissance, notably Fra Angelico.
Among the commissions on which Petit worked were Notre-Dame-de-Lorette in the early 1850s, the chapel at the Duke of Broglie’s château in
1854, the chapels of Bordeaux Cathedral, and a monumental fresco for the Church of Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais in Rouen. According to the inscription on the stretcher
of this work, it may be a ‘ricordo’ of a Madonna and Child commissioned for the Church of Saint-Vallier in Condes, situated in the Haute-Marne, some
forty kilometres from Savinien Petit’s birthplace.
