Description
ROMANTIC SCHOOL, PROBABLY SWISS OR GERMAN, CIRCA 1800 Jupiter striking the Earth with a thunderbolt Oil on canvas mounted on panel 115 x 115 cm (visible area) Framed. PROVENANCE - Auction, Sotheby’s, Amsterdam, 31 October–1 November 2005, lot 1459A (described as ‘18th-century German School’). This work was originally part of a four-part series, from a European aristocratic collection, depicting the four Greco-Roman deities Cybele, Juno, Zephyr, and finally Jupiter, the subject of this work. God of Heaven and Earth, Jupiter is depicted here in an atypical manner, in all his wrath, ready to hurl lightning down upon the earth from his eagle, against an apocalyptic red sky. The bold composition is in keeping with the fiery spirit of ‘dark Romanticism’ emerging at the end of the 18th century, closely aligned with the aesthetic of pioneers such as John Martin, William Blake, Johann Füssli, Francisco de Goya, and later Caspar David Friedrich.
