EMMA LOWSTEDT-CHADWICK (SWEDEN-FRANCE / 1855–1932) Nude among the Water Lilies Oil on original canvas (supplier’s mark ‘BLANCHET 20 rue Saint-Benoît Paris’ on the stretcher) Signed ‘E.L. CHADWICK’ (lower left), signed again with the initials ‘ELC’ (bottom right) 50.5 x 65 cm. Framed. Originally from Stockholm, Emma Lowstedt moved to Paris in 1881, where she enrolled at the Académie Julian and continued her training under Tony Robert-Fleury. She later settled in Grez-sur-Loing, an artists’ colony where many Swedish painters – notably Carl Larsson – had already taken up residence. There, Lowstedt married the American painter Francis Chadwick and continued her career as one of the leading figures of Impressionism, specialising in portraiture and genre scenes.
