Originally from Stockholm, Emma Lowstedt moved to Paris in 1881, where she enrolled at the Académie Julian and continued her training under Tony Robert-Fleury. She
later settled in Grez-sur-Loing, an artists’ colony where many Swedish painters – notably Carl Larsson – had already taken up residence. There, Lowstedt
married the American painter Francis Chadwick and continued her career as one of the leading figures of Impressionism, specialising in
portraiture and genre scenes.
