Andean region. Valdivia idol bust. Red-slip pottery. Height approx. 6.5 cm excluding the plinth. Mounted on a brass plinth. Provenance: public auction, formerly from a private collection. The Valdivia culture is the oldest of the Formative Period cultures in Ecuador (4th–2nd millennia BC). It features some of the earliest human representations on the American continent. As found (with missing parts). Guayas Province, Ecuador. Valdivia culture. Periods B and C. 2300–1500 BC.
