Asian Art. China. Magnificent monumental Cong, a prestigious ritual instrument, symbolising the earth and the channel through which Heaven acts. Nephrite jade, with natural veins in the stone. Height approx. 62 cm, 11 x 11 cm at the top, 8 x 8 cm at the base. Weighs approx. 12 kg. Displayed on a plinth. A large pillar with a square cross-section, centred on a hollow cylinder and flaring outwards towards the top. An ever-enigmatic archaic symbol of the relationship between Earth, Man and Heaven, and of rituals lost for over three thousand years. Symbolic decoration at the four corners, finely chiselled in relief and engraved: 21 alternating registers of human and zoomorphic masks with large oval eyes, characteristic of the Liangzhou ‘Jade Age’. An exceptional object, a work of the highest quality. Provenance: former French collection. In the style of the late Neolithic Liangzhou culture. Undated.
