Description
VAN SLINGELAND Pieter (1640–1691) ‘Portrait of a Young Woman, with a cartouche bearing the inscription “Pieter Van Slingeland”’ Ink wash on paper, tondo, diameter 15 cm. Fragment of a watermark featuring a fleur-de-lis and ‘4WR’. This may depict the same subject, albeit slightly older, as the painting in the Staten Museum of Kunst in Copenhagen, *The Girl with the Parrot*. The precision and meticulousness of the linework are reminiscent of his master, Gerard Dou. Expert: Mr Jean-Marie LE FELL, C.N.E. expert (38 rue de Trévise, 75009 Paris – 06 03 23 08 53 – [email protected]) Pieter Van SLINGELANG was a portrait and genre painter, draughtsman and miniaturist. A pupil of Gerard Dou, whose style he emulated, he was also a member of the Leiden Guild from 1661. Renowned for the exquisite ‘finish’ in the execution of his paintings, he trained Jacob van der Huys and Jan Frelius. His works are now held in numerous European museums.
