Description
Sword of the King’s Bodyguards, 1814 model, Restoration period. Gilded brass guard, with four prongs forming a shell shape, decorated with the Arms of France beneath a royal crown, set against a background of a bundle of flags and branches of oak and laurel. Long-tailed pommel. Wooden hilt covered in stingray skin and a double braided silver filigree. Blade marked ‘VERSAILLES’, a ‘C’ beneath a star replicating the Châteaudun hallmark, and the ‘B’ beneath a star of the inspector P. Bick 1813–1818; on the reverse of the shell, a ‘B’ sur star. Hollow-ground blade engraved with a trophy of arms, two fleurs-de-lis and the inscription ‘DU CORPS DU ROI. ’ on one side, and, on the other side, a trophy of the Arms of France. The back is engraved ‘Manufre Rle de Klingenthal August 1814’. It is hallmarked at the heel with the ‘B’ beneath a star of Inspector E.L. Borson, August 1814 to September 1816, and with the ‘B’ framed by laurel branches of First Class Inspector J.G. Bick, 1812 to May 1815. Blade length 92.4 cm, total length 107 cm.
