Description
Salvator Rosa (attributed to) - Study of figures of two friars in a landscape Brown ink on laid paper 10 x 13 cm Pen sketch depicting two male figures, probably friars, set in a barely sketched landscape. The stroke is rapid, nervous and synthetic, constructed through abbreviated signs that define the masses without dwelling on anatomical details. The landscape is rendered with fluid and fragmentary lines, contributing to an overall effect of spontaneity and graphic freedom, typical of study sheets. In the past, the sheet was attributed to Annibale Carracci, as documented by a collector's inscription on the back, while for stylistic characteristics and for the loose and vibrant stroke, with a nervous progression, it appears closer to the graphic sensibility of Salvator Rosa. Carracci' on the verso; further traces of numbering and remnants of paper labels at the corners.
