Description
Study of two female figures Italian school, 16th/17th century Brown ink on paper 21.5 x 16.5
Study sheet depicting two female figures executed with rapid and soft strokes. In the upper half there is a lowered female head with delicate features and a distracted gaze, characterised by a nuanced construction of the face and a flowing course of the hair. In the lower half, a half-naked half-length female figure is outlined, frontally posed, with a slight twist of the head to the right and modelled with just a few essential lines. The work reveals a clear dependence on models of the Leonardo and neo-sixteenth-century tradition, especially in the search for physiognomic softness, in the gentleness of the gazes and in the use of a shaded mark aimed at dissolving the contours. The typology of the female head recalls graphic exercises derived from the late Mannerist Lombard culture and the persistence of Leonardo da Vinci's lesson, disseminated between the 16th and 17th century through copies, studio studies and academic repertories. The drawing appears to be referable to a studio context or atelier exercise, probably executed by an educated but unidentified hand, active between the end of the 16th century and the first decades of the 17th century. The paper shows diffuse oxidation, small marginal lacunae, stains and surface abrasions. Minor perforations and tears.
