Description
Antonio Tempesta (attributed to) - Scene of battle between horsemen Pen and brown ink on paper 44 x 61 cm Large drawing on paper depicting a battle scene animated by horsemen attributable to Antonio Tempesta (Florence 1555 - Rome 1630), executed in pen and brown ink with dense hatching, on several sheets joined to form a broad horizontal composition. The scene unfolds with extraordinary narrative density, presenting a tight interweaving of figures in combat, rearing horses, falls and close encounters, according to a dynamic and swirling layout that constitutes one of the distinctive features of the artist's graphic production. An armed figure with shield and lance emerges on the right, while in the centre and on the left the battlefield is articulated in simultaneous episodes, with a construction by overlapping planes that accentuates the sense of depth and excitement. The sign, rapid but controlled, constructs the volumes through a dense weave of parallel and crossed lines, highlighting the artist's training in late Florentine Mannerism and his later openness towards more dynamic and narrative solutions, also intended for engraving. The sheet is in fact part of the type of inventions destined for printing, an area in which Antonio Tempesta had great fortune, disseminating models of battles and military scenes characterised by great inventiveness and variety of poses. The state of conservation of the drawing shows abrasions, gaps and folds, but the compositional layout remains fully legible, confirming the inventive quality and narrative complexity of the work.
