Description
Jean Honoré Fragonard (area of) - Genre scene with children and a dog Diluted brown ink and watercolour on paper 14.5 x 22 cm Sheet of Rococo taste depicting a genre scene with childish figures and a dog, set with great narrative spontaneity and characterised by a rapid and vibrant stroke. The composition shows an elegant and light sensibility, typical of French graphic culture in the second half of the 18th century. The work appears to be related to Jean-Honoré Fragonard, an absolute master of French Rococo painting and drawing, famous for his compositions animated by spontaneous grace, immediacy of execution and lively narrative spirit. The sheet shows clear affinities with the graphic production of the artist and his circle, especially in the freedom of the sign, the airy construction of the figures and the affectionate rendering of scenes of everyday and pastoral life. The scene, constructed with a few but effective environmental elements, recalls the idyllic and sentimental taste developed in late 18th-century France under the influence of gallant painting and rustic representations of theatrical descent. The soft modulation of browns and the light use of watercolours help to create an intimate and refined atmosphere. Framed.
