Coppo Di Marcovaldo (manner of) - Madonna and Child Enthroned tempera with gold background on panel 77.5 x 49.5 cm The painting is inspired by the famous Madonna of Orvieto by Coppo di Marcovaldo, one of the most significant images of 13th-century Tuscan painting, taking up its solemn frontal setting of the enthroned Virgin with the Blessing Child and the rigorous monumental balance of the composition.The work takes up many of the elements that characterise Coppo's language: the punched gold background, the rigorous symmetry of the composition, the richly decorated architectural throne and the strong hieratic fixity of the figures.
