Description
Annunciation Tuscan school, second half 16th century oil on panel 48 x 63 cm
A work of clear late Mannerist taste close to the figurative culture of Giorgio Vasari, probably part of a polyptych. The composition depicts the Virgin Mary on the left, caught at a lectern with an open book, and the Archangel Gabriel on the right in the act of annunciation. The haloed figures are arranged within an essential space, defined by reddish-brown tones and a simplified scenic construction. The cusped structure of the panel preserves archaic features still widespread in the peripheral Tuscan religious production of the 16th century. The work appears to be ascribable to the provincial diffusion of mannerist models elaborated in the Arezzo and Florentine environment linked to Vasari. In fact, the elongated figures, the gestural accentuation of the angel, the treatment of the drapery and the warm colours recall formulas typical of Vasari's culture, reinterpreted however in a more simplified and devotional manner. The quality of execution suggests the intervention of a local workshop updated on the modes of late Tuscan Mannerism. In this context, experiences close to Francesco Morandini and Michele Tosini can be recalled as cultural references. Within a double cusped arch frame.
