Description
Simone Del Tintore - Still Life with Dog Watching Birds and a Wild Boar 1673 oil on canvas 130 x 206 cm The canvas depicts a rich composition of game arranged on a stone plane in the foreground: hares, pheasants, ducks and other game are accumulated with studied plastic density, according to a tight and monumental compositional scheme. Behind the group of animals stands a hunting dog with a black and white coat, depicted in a vigilant position, gazing at the observer. The work, monogrammed and dated 1673, constitutes one of the chronological and stylistic cornerstones of Simone del Tintore's activity. The presence of the signature and the date allows the canvas to be placed with precision in the artist's mature phase, when the naturalistic language reached full autonomy with respect to the lesson of the master Pietro Paolini. From a stylistic point of view, the composition shows a layout of clear Caravaggio influence: a compact dark background, grazing lighting that enhances the plastic relief of the forms, strong chiaroscuro contrast and analytical rendering of the surfaces. The feathers, fur and flesh of the animals are treated with an almost tactile attention, restoring weight and material consistency to the inanimate bodies. The dog, a recurring element in the artist's production, does not assume a purely decorative role but participates in the narrative construction of the scene, introducing a subtle contrast between vitality and death. Its repeated presence in several paintings is a distinctive trait of Tintore's iconographic repertoire and contributes to the identification of his catalogue. The compact structure of the mass of game, the monumentality of the arrangement and the quality of the light confirm the work as one of the pinnacles of the artist's production, a significant witness of the Tuscan declination of 17th century naturalism in still life painting. In a 19th century wooden frame.Bibliography: 'Simone del Tintore, Tuscan Caravaggio', in News-Art.it, s.d: https://news-art.it/news/simone-del-tintore--caravaggesco-toscano.htm.
