Description
Dominican saint meditating on the crucifix Emilian school, 17th century oil on canvas 109 x 86 cm Half-length figure of a Dominican saint, depicted in a recollected attitude while contemplating a crucifix, flanked by a lily, alluding to purity. The habit of the order, consisting of a white tunic and black cloak, emerges from a dark background by means of grazing lighting that softly moulds the features of the face and hands, accentuating the devotional intensity of the image. The pictorial quality and the chiaroscuro structure recall the figurative culture of Emilia in the second half of the 17th century, with clear affinities with the language of Guercino, filtered through the activity of his circle and in particular of the Gennari family, active in the diffusion of more intimate and cosy ways. The typology, characterised by the reduction of iconographic attributes to a few essential elements, responds to a private devotional or conventual destination. The lack of unambiguous distinctive attributes does not allow a certain identification of the saint, who can be recognised more generically as belonging to the Dominican order.Within frame.
