Description
Diana and Callisto 18th century Franco-Flemish school oil on canvas 140 x 158 cm Oil painting on canvas depicting the mythological episode of Diana and Callisto, taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses, set in a large wooded landscape of pastoral taste. The work can be attributed to a Franco-Flemish artist of the 18th century, an artistic field characterised by the fusion of Nordic naturalistic sensibility and compositional refinement of French derivation. The scene depicts an intimate moment between Diana and her retinue of nymphs, including Callisto, captured before or during the revelation of her condition. On the right is the main group: elegantly arranged female figures with soft, conversational attitudes. The dominant figure, seated and slightly isolated, can be identified with Diana, while the nymph next to her, the object of attention, can be interpreted as Callisto. The presence of the dog recalls the typical attribute of the huntress goddess. On the left, a secondary group of figures contributes to the narrative construction and compositional balance.
