Description
Salvator Rosa (attributed to) - Profile of a Philosopher oil on canvas 41 x 34 cm Intense depiction of an ancient philosopher caught in profile in absorbed meditation. The figure emerges from the background with strong plastic evidence: the hollow profile, the long flowing beard and the vibrant ochre-yellow cloak combine to define an image of great evocative power. The work shows close consonances with the production of "heads of character" and philosophers elaborated by Salvator Rosa in the years of his maturity in Rome, especially for the expressive tension of the face, the synthetic but incisive brushstroke and the taste for intensely introspective human types. The chiaroscuro construction, together with the calibrated chromatic range played on deep browns and golden accents, also recalls that Roman-Napolitan figurative culture that, during the 17th century, developed a personal interpretation of Caravaggio's naturalism. The particular iconography of the character takes on further interest in light of Maurizio Marini's expertise, which traces the painting back to the sphere of Carlo Maratta. According to the scholar, the work would in fact be linked to the season of restoration work promoted by the Marches master in the Vatican Rooms, and in particular to the wall of Raphael Sanzio's "School of Athens". The subject would derive from one of the philosophers depicted in Raphael's famous fresco, reinterpreted in an autonomous key and with accentuated chiaroscuro intensity. While sharing the interest in the Roman classicist tradition highlighted by Marini, the quality of the pictorial drafting, the strong emotional tension of the face and the dramatic naturalism of the composition seem to bring the painting closer to the figurative culture of Salvator Rosa, in particular to his famous philosopher's heads painted during his stay in Rome. The concise but vibrant rendering of the subject matter, combined with the intense and meditative luministic construction, suggest a more convincing attribution to the Neapolitan master's sphere.
