Description
Half-length male portrait (Francesco Albani?) Roman school, 17th century oil on canvas
Intense half-length male portrait depicting a gentleman in a dark suit with a white collar, set in a severe Baroque style composition. The figure emerges from the dark background through a calibrated play of chiaroscuro that focuses attention on the gathered expression of the face and on the psychological rendering of the character. The work appears to be ascribable to the Roman portrait culture of the 17th century, characterised by a sober and elegant language, far from the decorative excesses of official portraiture and more oriented towards an introspective reading of the model. The luministic construction and the calm monumentality of the image recall the Roman classicist tradition developed in the circle of artists active between Rome and Bologna in the first half of the 17th century. On the back of the painting there is an old label identifying the figure with Francesco Albani and attributing the execution of the portrait to Andrea Sacchi. Although this identification needs further critical investigation, the work does indeed present features compatible with the Roman classicist culture gravitating around the figure of Andrea Sacchi, one of the major interpreters of Baroque painting with a classicist orientation in 17th century Rome. Within frame.
