Description
Bonaventura Bettera (attributed to) - Still Life with Musical Instruments oil on canvas 72 x 117 cm A refined musical still life set within a scenographic interior with stringed instruments, sheet music and precious drapery, painted in accordance with the illusionistic taste of Lombard painting in the late 17th and early 18th century. The composition presents a calibrated theatrical arrangement of the objects, illuminated by a grazing light that enhances the wooden surfaces of the instruments and the material consistency of the fabrics. The work is part of the famous trend of 'musical still lifes' developed in the Bergamo area around the figure of Bartolomeo Bettera, one of the main followers of Evaristo Baschenis. In fact, critics identify Bonaventura Bettera as the probable son of Bartolomeo, documented through a limited corpus of signed and dated works, characterised by the revival of his father's models with a later and more decorative language. Compared to Bartolomeo's more severe approach, the works attributed to Bonaventura generally show a softer scenic construction, a lightened chromatism and a greater openness towards the ornamental taste of the early 18th century. This is also the context for the present composition, in which the close arrangement of the instruments, the theatrical drapery and the illusionistic effect of space refer directly to the tradition of the Bettera workshop. Within frame.
