Description
Theological Dispute between Saints and Doctors of the Church Roman School, 18th century oil on canvas 243 × 373
Monumental composition belonging to a pair of canvases of exceptional pictorial quality and imposing dimensions, referable to 18th-century Roman figurative culture and in particular to the milieu gravitating around Marco Benefial, one of the most original interpreters of 18th-century Roman naturalism. The work depicts a complex theological dispute set within a severe and theatrical architectural space, in which saints, bishops and doctors of the Church are gathered around a table covered with a precious oriental carpet. The scene is constructed through a calibrated orchestration of gestures, glances and attitudes that gives the whole a strong narrative tension and an extraordinary psychological vitality. The centrepiece of the composition is the figure of the mitered bishop, caught in the act of authoritatively intervening in the discussion, while the bystanders react with attitudes of meditation, confrontation or dispute. The open books in the foreground take on a precise symbolic value, alluding to theological Wisdom and the primacy of the written word in the definition of ecclesiastical doctrine. The pictorial quality of the canvas is particularly noteworthy: the vigorous modelling of the figures, the extraordinary rendering of the drapery, the luministic construction played on strong chiaroscuro contrasts and the physiognomic truth of the faces recall that current of Roman painting in the 18th century which, in opposition to the more decorative outcomes of the late Baroque, recovers a severe naturalistic monumentality. In this sense, the painting shows significant points of contact with the culture of Marco Benefial, especially in the robust plastic setting of the figures, in the expressive intensity and in the desire to give the narrative a strong moral and human accent. The exceptional size of the canvas, together with the very high quality of the execution, suggest a particularly prestigious commission, probably linked to an important ecclesiastical, conventual or institutional context in Rome. In fact, the monumental conception of the work and the complexity of the iconographic programme suggest a celebratory or representative destination of great importance.
