Pompeo Batoni (workshop of) - Sacred Heart of Jesus oil on copper 29 x 24 cm Devotional painting depicting the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which can be traced back to an iconographic model widely attested in Batoni's serial production in the religious sphere. The image shows Christ half-length, with his head slightly inclined and his gentle gaze directed towards the observer, wrapped in the traditional blue mantle over a pink tunic. In the centre of the composition, supported by his hands, stands the flaming heart, girded with thorns and surmounted by the cross, radiating from an intense light that spreads across his chest, according to an iconography that was by then codified and widely diffused in the second half of the 18th century following the fortune of the images promoted by the devotion to the Sacred Heart.The high quality of execution is evident in the smooth rendering of the complexion and the soft tonal transitions faithful to the prototype conceived and popularised by Pompeo Batoni.
